Steel milling

Milling of steel - what is this process?

Milling is a popular method of steel processing, which involves forming parts by punching them. Milling primarily uses CNC milling machines, which operate automatically, as well as conventional equipment operated manually. Through milling, steel parts used for various structural purposes are produced. The key point is that milling makes it possible to cut almost any object, of varying shapes, sizes and layout, maintaining the highest level of precision.

Milling of steel - highlights

Two basic methods include CNC milling and conventional milling. Regardless of the type of milling, the entire process follows similar steps. First comes rough machining, also known as pre-milling, which involves removing excess material. It is followed by medium-precision machining, during which a shape close to the target is given. This is followed by fine machining, during which the target shape is obtained, and finally finishing machining, which involves smoothing the workpieces.

After milling is completed, metal parts can be subjected to further processing: hardening, varnishing, painting, as well as covering with other layers. Steel processing with a milling machine is often used, but it always requires adjusting the parameters to the requirements of the specific material.

The milling machine is also used for steel processing.

Milling of steel - CNC and conventional

Two main methods are used for steel milling - CNC and manual. In the first case, you take advantage of the possibilities offered by computer numerical control - through the computer you enter the design of the element you want to obtain, and then the machine automatically carries out all the operations. The advantage of choosing CNC steel milling is high accuracy, the ability to machine parts of the most fanciful and demanding shapes, and high repeatability. CNC machining is ideal for orders for large quantities of identical parts.

Manual steel milling involves the use of manually operated equipment by an operator. It is a solution that does not use the intermediation of a computer, relying on the experience and skills of the operator. The accuracy of the project and the precision of the cuts made will depend on him. Manual steel milling is used for orders of smaller quantities of parts, including single pieces.

What types of steel can be milled?

Many types of steel are suitable for such machining, and the level of carbon content is key in this regard. We can expect the best machinability from steels with a carbon content of 0.25%. For steels with lower carbon content, the level of machinability decreases and machining becomes more difficult. Depending on the composition of the steel, as well as other physical and mechanical properties, a specific type of milling and machining parameters must be selected. Only in this way do we get a guarantee that the entire process will proceed in a controlled and efficient manner.
